who ????????????

Ocean Mist Outfitters is a small, veteran-owned, family run, Alaskan outdoor adventure company. We are located on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. Our family moved to Alaska in 1997. It was the boyhood dream of our Dad and founder Capt. Rick McCoy, to live and raise a family in remote Alaska. He and his wife (our Mom Helen) have enjoyed raising their 7 children, homesteading, homeschooling, and fishing/hunting, and gathering in the wild outdoors of Alaska.

It is our purpose to share our way of life and our love for the Tongass National Forest and the surrounding ocean with people from all over the world. We strive to enable them to experience with all of their senses and with the power of their minds, the majesty of the coastal rainforest here. We hope you will take memories of this unique ecosystem back to share with others and raise awareness of the need to make sure places like this are preserved for future generations.

Biography: Our Crew

Captain Rick McCoy – I grew up in North Carolina and I am a U.S. Army Veteran. I spent most of my boyhood roaming the expanse of woods behind my house with my faithful dog Rex. At the age of 8, I read “The Call of the Wild” by Jack London and knew my future would be in Alaska. I  bring 29 years of Alaskan wilderness experience to our operation. I have worked as a boat captain, hunting guide, sportfishing guide, and waterfowl guide in many remote areas of the state. I also walked into the Talkeetna mountains and carved out a homestead for my family in the late ‘90s. I am a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner with experience in Family and Emergency Medicine and have worked in remote solo-provider rural health clinics in the Aleutian Islands, Kodiak Island, and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. I have also worked as a Critical Care Flight Nurse Practitioner.

Jeremiah McCoy – The middle son and #4 of 7 children. Jeremiah has been on the ocean since he was 3-4 years old. He always out fishes his dad. He has worked as a skiff man on seine boats from Southeast Alaska to the Aleutian Islands. Jeremiah is a multiple time Alaska State Judo Champion, an accomplished high school wrestler and a regional wrestling champion. He is a licensed Mortgage Loan Originator. Most importantly he is a great husband and new dad! He is the technical brain behind our business and you are on our website and reading this biography because of his hard work!

Helen McCoy – Wife and Mom extraordinaire, the rock that anchors our family. Helen is the expert provisioner, scheduler, bookkeeper, and brains behind all our adventure tours and other trips. If you ate well and were comfortable on your trip, be sure to let her know! Helen is also a master’s prepared Teacher of the Blind and Visually Impaired, a special education teacher, a Library of Congress certified Braille Transcriber, and a licensed massage therapist.

Isaiah McCoy – The youngest son and #6 of 7 children. Isaiah is a recent HS graduate (2026) with 2 years of college classes already under his belt. He is majoring in Homeland Security at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and is on a full academic scholarship. He is also an All state High School swimmer. He is an accomplished outdoorsman and knows our yacht the “Ocean Mist” better than anyone. He is responsible for her maintenance and safe operation. You will be glad he is onboard as you travel with us throughout the coastal waters and land of the Tongass National Forest.
